DEP to Host Open House on Liberty State Park Revitalization Program on Saturday, Sept. 28

On Saturday, Sept. 28 at Liberty State Park, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will host the fourth in its series of open house-style events on the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program. The open house will focus on the restoration of the historic train shed, vehicle and pedestrian circulation throughout the park, active recreation amenities and updates on the cleanup of the park’s long fenced-off interior.

The open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the waiting room of the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal Building at 1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City. Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette will deliver remarks in front of the terminal building at 11 a.m. prior to the doors opening.

Those unable to attend the open house in person can view and comment on the materials presented on the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program’s website following the conclusion of the open house.

Open House Details:

At the open house, attendees will have an opportunity to view posters, provide their comments and ask staff questions. Engaging interactive exercises will also help to inform revitalization program decisions. Reflective of feedback from stakeholders and the public, advanced conceptual designs for LSP-North will be shared and attendees are encouraged to provide additional comments to shape the areas targeted for early development.

The DEP encourages the use of Liberty State Park’s pilot shuttle service to arrive at the open house. The free-to-ride shuttle makes stops at seven key locations throughout the park, including the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail’s Liberty State Park Station. Find a map of the shuttle stops at dep.nj.gov/revitalizelsp/shuttle.

Parking for the event is available in Lot 8, located directly behind the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal Building. Free parking validation stickers will be available for open house attendees.

Background on the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program:

The Liberty State Park Revitalization Program will bring more than 100 acres of active recreational, arts, and cultural improvements to Liberty State Park’s perimeter and create a central park at its heart with world-class natural landscapes that build resilience to flooding and climate change while providing passive recreation and educational opportunities for park visitors.

Three concurrent projects which make up the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program are ongoing -

  • LSP-North: Improvements along the Audrey Zapp Drive corridor which includes the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal Building’s historic train shed, the park’s northern waterfront areas, the north cove and the Grove of Remembrance.
  • LSP-Interior: The cleanup and restoration of the park’s long fenced-off interior section to the west of Freedom Way. This area will include a 5.6-mile walking and running trail network, scenic overlooks with NJ/NY harbor and skyline views, and native tidal and non-tidal wetlands, meadows and urban forest. These diverse and resilient habitats will not only provide significant ecological benefits but also help manage stormwater runoff from surrounding communities.
  • LSP-South: Includes the park areas along Morris Pesin Drive and Thomas McGovern Drive to the south, and between Freedom Way and the Hudson River to the east. Improvements to this area include the construction of several athletic fields and court-based sports in a future Southern Athletics Hub, and improved circulation to other areas of the park. A master plan is in development which will serve as a roadmap for short- and long-term parkwide improvements while also ensuring connectivity with the LSP-Interior project.

Liberty State Park Revitalization Program History:

In May 2023, Commissioner LaTourette advanced the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program with an initial open house event showcasing plans for the LSP-Interior project. A groundbreaking ceremony for the LSP-Interior project was later held last October alongside a second open house event focused on LSP-North. A third open house focused on LSP-South took place in May 2024.
