Rutgers Gardens & Herbarium Van Trip October 11

Herbarium

Date: Friday, October 11
Time: 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Location: Meet at Arboretum
Ages: adults
Cost: $21 registration fee plus bring cash for the herbarium ($5-10) and the garden tour ($10/adult, $8/senior 65 & older)

Let’s take a van to explore some natural treasures at Rutgers!  We will board the Parks van at the Arboretum and then drive to the Chrysler Herbarium for an hour-long tour.  We will see a demonstration of pressing techniques, some unique specimens (plants, lichens, mosses, and algae), and learn how specimens are mounted, repaired, and stored.  We will also learn about the history of the herbarium and floristic discovery in New Jersey, and how specimens are photographed and then put online for all to use wherever they are in the globe.  We will then head over to the Rutgers Gardens where we will do a tour with garden director Bruce Crawford.  Garden areas include the Sun & Shade Garden, Display Garden, Holly Collection, Pollinator Garden, Rain Garden, and Evergreen Garden.  After the formal tour, we will have about two hours for lunch and free time.  Participants will have the opportunity to purchase lunch like soup, salad, or sandwiches at the weekly Farmer’s Market.  They might also choose to explore the natural areas surrounding the gardens.  Participants must be comfortable walking over uneven ground and navigating stairs.
