Haddonfield Partners Grace Church, the Indian King tavern Museum, and the Historical Society of Haddonfield are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the New Jersey Constitution with an educational lecture.
This talk will cover the evolution of the New Jersey Constitution from its drafting and ratification in July of 1776 to today. Issues of voting eligibility, the abolition of slavery and women's rights will be discussed. New Jersey’s is the fourth colony to adopt a constitution, 2 days prior to the Declaration of Independence and 11 years before our federal constitution. This event will shine a light on the importance of our state constitution during a time of great uncertainty and turmoil.
State-constitutional expert Robert Williams will present this program. He is the former Director of the Center for State Constitutional Studies and a Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus at Rutgers Law School in Camden. Professor Williams is the author of multiple books including The New Jersey State Constitution (Oxford University Press); and more than 60 articles on state constitutional law in law journals and social science publications.
Visitors alike will have the opportunity to step back into the tense days of the American Revolution , a unique living-history event.
