New Jersey Planning Officials (NJPO), founded in 1938, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization providing educational services, support and information to municipal planning boards and zoning boards of adjustment. Associate members include citizens groups and corporations interested in planning, individuals who are not members of a group, and professionals (lawyers, planners, engineers, etc.). Program participants, advisory council members and officers of NJPO are volunteers. The purpose of the NJPO, as stated in its Constitution, is to promote public interest in municipal and regional planning; to foster the cooperation of planning boards and boards of adjustment throughout New Jersey in furthering the aims of planning; to assist local planning boards and boards of adjustment with advice; and to encourage the development of regional, county and state planning as an aid to local planning. Until 1992, the organization was known as the New Jersey Federation of Planning Officials.
