The North American Butterfly Association (NABA)-North Jersey Butterfly Club was founded in 1995. It is the oldest of the 23 NABA chapters in the United States. NABA’s purpose is to promote the non-consumptive study, conservation, appreciation, and enjoyment of butterflies. In 2018 our chapter had about 115 members, many of whom come to our monthly meetings and field trips. Our chapter is one of NABA’s most active, having meetings with interesting programs nine months of every year, 8-10 field trips per year, and a summer picnic. We also assist other organizations in their butterfly events, give presentations on butterflies to other nature clubs, work with schools to establish butterfly gardens, assist agencies and conservation groups in removing invasive plant species from colonies of rare butterflies, and report sightings of Threatened and Endangered species to the NJ Endangered and Non-game Species Program. Several members compile NABA Fourth of July Butterfly Counts, and many members participate in several such counts. Our members come from many backgrounds and some are experts in other taxa such as plants, herptiles, birds, and other insects, and all gladly share their knowledge and experience with members and non-members alike.
New members and guests including young ones are always welcome. We meet at 7:30 P.M. the first Tuesday of most months at the Haggerty Education Center of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, Morris County. There is no meeting in July (when many members are occupied in organizing and participating in the Fourth of July counts), or December. The August meeting is a picnic.
