standards - document delivery

Document Delivery:

Adobe Acrobat and Lizardtech DjVu:

Acrobat (http://www.adobe.com) and DjVu (http://www.djvu.com) are the primary standard formats for document delivery at the NJEDL. Since Adobe Acrobat is generally more widely accepted by users as a standard file format for digital documents, it is the preferred format for document presentation in the NJEDL.

Generally, Acrobat works best for presenting documents originating in a digital form, such as Microsoft Word. DjVu, however, has proven more versatile for scanning print documents, with higher compression ratios (smaller file sizes) and a more accurate representation of the original document. Therefore, when a digital copy of a document cannot be obtained, a DjVu file will usually be created from a print version. In this case, archives are made of the scanned pages as uncompressed TIFF images.

Browser plug-ins are required for both file types. The Adobe Acrobat plug-in and Lizardtech Djvu plug-in are both available at no charge for a variety of browser and operating system platforms.

Document submissions and collection development:

The NJEDL prefers to receive documents in the electronic form in which they were originally created. We can then convert these files to a file format suitable for general delivery on the World Wide Web (Acrobat or DjVu), while preserving the original format for archiving purposes. Generally, any non-proprietary text format (e.g., .rtf) is preferred. If we receive a file in a format not readable by any of the software available at the NJEDL, another format will be requested, or else a print copy must be used for scanning.

Videos and other multimedia formats:

Video and Audio files are presented in Real Player (http://www.real.com) format. The current version of the Real Player (Real One) is available as a free download from Real (choose the option for free Real One Player, and follow the instructions). As a result of our mission to preserve documents from as many sources as possible, the NJEDL may be required on occasion to post files in other, non-standard formats. When this is required, the user will be notified in the document record of the software requirements.
