partnerships
Primary Partnerships:
The NJEDL is the result of a major collaboration between the Scholarly Communication Center (in Alexander Library, Rutgers University Libraries) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Alexander Library and the Scholarly Communication Center
Alexander Library serves as the major humanities and social science research library within the Rutgers University Libraries system. Within the Alexander Library, the Scholarly Communication Center (SCC), completed in March 1997, is a multifunctional teaching, research, and training facility - technologically enriched for learning and teaching in the electronic age. It also serves the university and state communities as a test bed for the development, application and evaluation of new digital information resources. The SCC's public services functions include the provision of resources and services for the use of various statistical data and data manipulation tools, GIS services, and humanities data usage. The SCC is the Library system's locus for the development of various Digital Library initiatives, and is home to the NJEDL librarians and staff.
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Original funding for the NJEDL came from NJ
DEP's Division of Science, Research, and Technology as part of a project
entitled "Creating a Directory of Ecosystem Data for Indicator Development and
Ecosystem Assessment." The NJEDL project receives continuing support from the
New Jersey Department of Environmental
Protection and the Bureau of Geographic
Information Systems.
Extended Partnerships: The NJEDL project relies on an extended network of partners and collaborators to expand our base of expertise, to achieve cost-effectiveness through resource sharing, and to develop linkages to a diverse user community.
New Jersey Center for Environmental Indicators (CEI)
The CEI is the
product of a unique alliance among scientists, social scientists, and information
specialists. The SCC and CEI have merged their operations to integrate indicator
research with the SCC's digital outreach services and information management
systems.
New York - New Jersey Clean Ocean and Shore Trust (COAST)
COAST is a bistate,
bipartisan statutory commission between New York and New Jersey charged to
evaluate environmental and economic issues and formulate strategies to conserve
marine and coastal resources. The SCC/COAST partnership will link the databases
of the New Jersey Environmental Digital Library and ENDEX with COAST's "Vortex"
- a comprehensive catalogue of 'who is doing what' in NY-NJ environmental
research.
New Jersey Office of GIS/New Jersey Office of Information Technology
(OIT)
The New Jersey Office
of GIS has developed the New Jersey Geographic
Information Network (NJGIN) to promote communications among users, encourage
data development partnerships, and eliminate the duplication of data sets.
This office provides consulting services to the NJEDL project, in keeping
with their vision of seamless access to geographically-referenced information.
Division of Science, Research and Technology - Information
Resource Center (IRC)
Since 1984, the Information
Resource Center (IRC) has been the New Jersey Department of Environmental
Protection's (NJDEP) library and information center for environmental science
and technology. Two professional librarians manage a collection of books,
journals, government documents and regulatory information related to environmental
health, site remediation, toxicology, water resources, waste management, and
more, and many of these documents have been provided to the NJEDL to make
available to the public. The IRC is a branch library of the New
Jersey State Library and is supported by NJDEP's Division of Science,
Research and Technology.
