The NJEDL is an online library of environmental literature and multimedia related to New Jersey. The collection includes documents and reports, scientific studies, photographs, videos, maps, and more.
Most of the items in this collection are considered "grey literature" - unavailable through common research tools like library catalogs and indexes.
Our goal is to locate, acquire, and preserve these valuable but hard-to-find resources for citizens and researchers to use, and to make the collection digitally available - at your desktop!

Fish Smart, Eat Smart: Guide to Health Advisories
Fish are an excellent source of protein, minerals and vitamins, are low in fat and cholesterol and play an important role in maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet. However, certain fish may contain toxic chemicals, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and mercury from the water they live in and the food they eat. This guide provides information on how to reduce your risk by avoiding or limiting consumption of certain fish, and guides you in preparing the fish you eat from local waters in ways that reduce your exposure to PCBs, dioxins and mercury.

DEP Awards Grants To Aid Local Recycling Programs
The Department of Environmental Protection is providing New Jersey's municipalities and counties a record $14.5 million in grants to boost local recycling efforts, Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Mark N. Mauriello announced. The $14.5 million in recycling tonnage grants is nearly double the previous record of 2008, when $8 million was awarded as the result of the implementation of the Recycling Enhancement Act, signed into law by Gov. Jon S. Corzine that year to help New Jersey reach its recycling-rate targets. This year's total is also nearly three times higher than the pre-Recycling Enhancement Act high of $5.5 million awarded in 1995. The REA significantly increased the amount of grant money available to local governments by creating a recycling enhancement fund through a $3-per-ton surcharge on trash taken to solid-waste disposal facilities. Motorists Advised To Be Alert For Deer, Slow Down
Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Mark N. Mauriello urged motorists to drive very carefully this season when deer are particularly active and more likely to be darting into roadways. "It's breeding season for white-tailed deer right now, and motorists should be on the lookout," Commissioner Mauriello said. "Deer can be seen crossing roadways at any time of day, but typically they are most active during the morning and in the evening. Motorists can minimize the risk of accidents with deer by being alert and slowing down." Go to the Web Site

Mauriello announced that construction will begin on a pathway that will complete the 70-mile trail running along the Delaware & Raritan Canal from Frenchtown to New Brunswick. The $400,000 project will be funded by capital-improvement dollars dedicated for projects in state parks, forests and wildlife management areas. Clearing of the site, which is the first step in the path construction, will begin soon. Currently, the Delaware & Raritan Canal path in Trenton ends at Old Rose Street and then continues approximately 1.5 miles north on Mulberry Street. Go to the Web site

DEP Preserves Scenic Area Along The Delaware River
Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Mark N. Mauriello announced the preservation of a 213-acre scenic property in West Amwell Township, Hunterdon County. The DEP's Green Acres program purchased the Goat Hill Overlook property for $4.5 million from Constructural Dynamics Inc. of Fairless Hills, Pa. The company acquired Goat Hill Overlook from the Boy Scouts in 1983 and originally intended to use the land for mining operations. That plan was later changed in favor of constructing a residential development complex at the site. In addition to views of the Delaware River, the property features a prominent rock, known as Washington Rock. According to local legend, General George Washington used the views from Goat Hill Overlook to assess battle conditions during the Revolutionary War. The site also offers miles of hiking trails and contains a variety of wildlife and plant species. Go to the Web Site
